Hapkido, with origins in Korea, is a unique form of martial arts which instead of teaching attack, it teaches self-defense. Hapkido moves are a series of blocks and counterattacks designed to protect you from blows of common street assailants as well as skilled martial artists. The neck grab is just one of many different ways in hapkido to defend against a common straight punch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the hapkido neck grab only in extreme situations in which your life is in danger, as this move can seriously injure your attacker. Squat down quickly as the attacker throws out her straight punch. You want her arm to cross over the top of your right shoulder.

  2. Step 2

Reach up with your left hand and push firmly against the shoulder of his punching arm to keep the arm out straight and defenseless. Punch your attacker with your right hand, striking the right side of his face. Move your right hand around the right side of his face and wrap your arm firmly around his neck.

  3. Step 3

Push her head down, still holding onto her straight punching arm, and bring her head in near your stomach. At this point, you can maintain this position of the hapkido defense technique and call for help or continue to the more extreme version.

  4. Step 4

Hold the head and neck firmly as you release your grip on his straight punching arm. Bring your left hand to the side of his face, gripping the head firmly. Lift up quickly and firmly with your entire body.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use this technique with caution both during a serious attack and during practice, as this hapkido move is designed to break the neck.
