Hapkido is a Korean based form of martial arts which differs from other styles in that it teaches defense instead of attack. Hapkido teaches it's students a series of blocks and counterattacks which can be used against common street criminals as well as skilled martial artists. Because the straight punch is one of the most common attacks, the defense technique is one of the first learned in beginner's hapkido.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Step quickly to the side as your attacker throws the straight punch. Lift up with your right hand as you step out, gripping the attacker's wrist firmly with your hand.

  2. Step 2

Hold his arm out straight and high as you use your roundhouse kick to his stomach. That is, shift your body weight to your left foot as you lift your right heel to your buttocks. Swing your right foot out straight, landing a blow with the top of your foot to the center of his torso.

  3. Step 3

Step your right leg down, continuing to hold her punching arm straight out in front of her. Pivot your body on your right leg as you swing and kick the back of her right leg with your left leg.

  4. Step 4

Twist the wrist now, forcing his punching arm to buckle at the elbow and reinforcing the hapkido defense technique by placing your left hand firmly just below the shoulder joint on his upper arm.

  5. Step 5

Push down firmly, forcing her to fall to the ground as you lower your body with them. Hold her punching arm at the back of the body and place your right knee in the crook of her neck to hold them down. Use this opening to call for help.
