Hapkido is a Korean style martial art which utilizes a number of blocks and counterattacks instead of the traditional attack techniques of most martial arts. The self-defense methods taught in hapkido are designed to work against both unskilled street attackers and trained martial artists. With practice and a few tips, you can learn how to defend yourself from a strike to the side.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use this hapkido defense technique to block a strike with a knife or a jab punch. Counter the punch by bringing the inside of your left wrist to attacker's wrist as he throws his punch, stopping it before impact. Push his arm out to the side, away from his body, and grip the wrist with your left hand. At the same time, push your hand with the heel forward, hitting him in the face.

  2. Step 2

Release your hand after the punch and quickly grasp her wrist with your right hand now. Hold the wrist firmly as you turn to the side and step your body under her arm, twisting the wrist as you turn your body. As you make full circle, grip the wrist firmly with both hands.

  3. Step 3

Push his arm down when you have made a complete turn, forcing him to fall to the ground. As he strikes the ground, fall to the floor with him and hold his elbow down firmly with one hand. This hapkido technique should force the attacker to drop his weapon and allow you time to call for help.

  4. Step 4

Turn your body to the side and place your knee over her elbow once your attacker is on the ground if you need one hand free for some reason, such as to make an emergency phone call.
