Hapkido is a Korean form of martial arts which teaches it's students self-defense technique instead of attack technique. Unique in that the moves are based on blocks and counterattacks, hapkido can be used against street attackers or even skilled martial artists. The hapkido strike defense is an important move to learn as it teaches defense against an overhand punch or even an overhand attack with a knife or other object.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Step out to the side as the attacker begins this downward strike, moving so that you are facing the outside of his arm. Remember that being alert is your best defense, and without the ability to see the strike coming, your hapkido skills will be useless.

  2. Step 2

Grap your opponent's wrist quickly with your left hand so that she has no opportunity to lift and strike again. Push down firmly on her arm; however, make sure that you push her arm in towards her own body, as you can end up getting injured in the struggle if she happens to have a knife in her hand.

  3. Step 3

Push your right hand out hard and with the heel of you hand, strike him in the face. If possible, aim the punch so that it lands on the neck, just below the the jaw near the ear, as this is an extremely sensitive area. If not possible, simply aim for the face, as any blow is good defense. You should be continuing to hold his arm down.

  4. Step 4

Wrap your right arm around the back of her neck after your punch and pull her head down into your stomach. As your are pushing down, twist her arm around to the back of their body so that she cannot try to strike again in defense. This hapkido move should allow you time and opportunity to stop the attack and call for help.
