Hapkido's cross hand grab uses a joint lock to put breaking pressure on an opponent's wrist and elbow as he tries to grab and hold your wrist. The cross hand grab is strikingly simple and painfully effective if you execute it correctly.

From Quick Guide: Hapkido: Jack of All Trades
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Allow your hapkido opponent to reach across you and grab your wrist that's on the opposite side of his grabbing hand. Remain in the position you're in and don't step away from or towards your opponent.

  2. Step 2

Move your grabbed wrist in a small arc that moves inside of your opponent's wrist (move your arm towards your body), up and over his arm so that you end up grabbing his forearm. Get a tight hold on the forearm.

  3. Step 3

Bring your second hand across your body and place it on top of your opponent's trapped hand so that you hold it flat against your forearm and in place.

  4. Step 4

Take a step back, away from your opponent and apply a downward pressure on his trapped hand.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask your opponent to resist the cross hand grab more each time you practice the move so you can gauge how effective your execution of the hapkido move is. Also ask him to tap only when he feels pain, not just discomfort.
