How to Use the Hand Wheel on a Sewing Machine

The hand wheel provides a way to move the needle in a much more controlled fashion than the foot pedal. It is located on the right hand side of the sewing machine. Turning this wheel allows you to move the needle at your own pace. It can be used for threading the top needle, pulling up the bobbin thread and pushing the needle through thick portions of fabric.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Uncover the sewing machine, and connect the power cord and foot pedal. The connectors are located on the right side of the sewing machine, typically on the lower right hand corner. Be sure that the power cord and the cord to the foot pedal are both connected.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the sewing machine is off. The power button is typically located on the right side of the sewing machine in front of the connectors. The hand wheel can be used while the machine is on if you are in the process of sewing.

  3. Step 3

Place a hand on the hand wheel and turn as necessary. For most machines, turning the wheel towards yourself raises and lowers the needle as it would move during normal sewing. Turning the wheel away from yourself does the opposite, sewing backwards as it would when holding the reverse stitch button.

Tips & Warnings
  • Turn the wheel slowly and smoothly. Jerking motions may cause the thread to bunch or be too loose on the material.
  • There is a risk involved with using a needle. Be sure to keep your fingers away from the needle while it is moving, and wear a thimble if necessary.
