Things You'll Need:
- Toner
- Shampoo
- Cool water
-
Step 1
Select a toner that works with your hair color. Choose one that will eliminate harsh or brassy tones. As an example, you can combat gold or red with the right toner. Stay close to your natural color for toner—no more or less than two shades difference.
-
Step 2
Begin adding the toner to your hair, in medium to small sections. Work the toner into the roots and pull it down toward the tips of your hair.
-
Step 3
Run your fingers through your entire head of hair to slightly spread the toner into the untouched hair. This allows the light and dark shades to merge, creating more than two shades of color in your hair.
-
Step 4
Follow the manufacturer's directions and allow the toner to set for 2 to 30 minutes. A shorter setting time creates a more natural look.
-
Step 5
Rinse the excess color using cool water, once the toner has set and brought out the desired color. Shampoo your hair gently to remove the last remnants of color. Continue rinsing your hair until the water runs clear.
