Timing, tempo and balance are the three most important components of any golf swing. Driving, chipping and putting all rely on a smooth motion and consistent stroke, and the only way to develop this is through proper practice. Follow these tips to learn the correct elements of an effective golf swing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Relax mentally before addressing the ball. Getting rid of muscular tension is nearly impossible if your mind isn't calm and clear.

  2. Step 2

Loosen your grip on the club. This allows your muscles to move free of tension during the swing, which increases both your control and your sense of rhythm.

  3. Step 3

Balance your weight evenly between your legs when you address the ball. It also helps to stand slightly on the balls of your feet, instead of completely flat-footed.

  4. Step 4

Shift most of your weight to the inside of your right foot as you smoothly take the club back.

  5. Step 5

Redistribute your weight onto your front foot as you swing through the golf ball. Your head needs to be slightly behind the ball at impact, which helps increase the tilt of your backbone and shift your hips forward.

  6. Step 6

Move almost all of your weight onto the outside of your front foot as you follow through the shot. Your back foot should be rotated forward and pointed at the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Repeat your swing with the same rhythm and timing each time to lock in its mechanics. Consistency is the key to playing strong golf, and you can't be consistent without a steady rhythm.
