How to Use the Impact Zone of a Golf Swing

The impact zone in a golf swing is the base of the swing, between your right and left hips. Both your arms are fully extended and the full force of the torque effort will be transferred from your body to the golf ball. Maximizing this zone will improve the length of all your golf shots and the power at impact.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take your regular golf stance while holding your seven iron in your normal grip. Take a half back swing, stopping waist high. Pause and then come down toward the ball. Swing through and stop waist high on the left side. This is the impact zone.

  2. Step 2

Repeat the half swing, but focus on increasing the power drive of your swing once your right hand begins to roll over the left. This switch occurs as your hands pass your right hip and continues as your arms pass over your left hip.

  3. Step 3

Drive through the swing with your hips, as your arms pass through the impact zone. This will increase the power in your swing and the distance the ball will travel. Move your arms in tandem with your hips for maximum impact.

  4. Step 4

Focus on pulling your arms down and then using a sweeping motion across the bottom of the swing to increase the club head speed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Resist the urge to flick your wrists at the point of impact with the ball. This will significantly decrease the power in your swing, and increase your chance of injury.
