Step 1
Start by asking them if they've ever had a professional manicure. You can tailor some of your other questions based on whether they know what to expect when they get a manicure or if you need to walk them through the process.
-
Step 2
Inquire about their health. You especially want to know if they are diabetic, because of circulation issues, or if they have arthritis in their hands. Some salons require clients to sign a health release form.
-
Step 3
Ask how they would like their nails to be shaped; round or squared off are popular options. You might try suggesting a different shape than what they currently have, based on the length of their nails as well as their fingers. A different shape might make their fingers appear longer and their hands look nicer overall.
-
Step 4
Find out a little about your clients' lifestyles. If they are hard on their hands and nails in their profession, you might want to steer them away from very long acrylic nails.
-
Step 5
Talk to your client about what color they'd like to have their nails painted, or maybe nail art or French manicure is what they desire.
-
Step 6
Make sure that a client who's getting her first professional manicure knows that she needs to allow time for the polish to dry before leaving the salon. You don't want a customer to smudge her fresh polish and end up unhappy with the manicure.
