Fly fishing is a sport that requires specialized skills. To master them requires practice and patience. Casting and dropping the fly right where you want it without alerting the nearby fish is a true art. You set the hook in the mouth of the fish by either the strip or the side pull technique and you will avoid breaking your leader or ripping the hook through the fish's lip.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cast the fly to a position in front of the path of a target fish. This position should be a point on either side of the fish but ahead of it. Make sure you will be pulling the fly through the water at the edge of the fish's field of vision. You don't want the fish to think that the fly is attacking it or it will spook. Always cast to a fish that is moving away from you and cast the fly beyond the fish so that it moves towards the fish instead of pulling past a fish from the rear. This is a much more natural movement of prey.

  2. Step 2

Allow the fly to slip by the fish without drawing it away from its path. If the fish doesn't take the bait, repeat the process until there is a move to make a strike.

  3. Step 3

Hold the line and pole in a straight line towards the fish. Use your other hand to hold the line and prepare for the strike. Give a sharp tug on the line to set the hook when the fish strikes. If the fish spits the hook out, tug once more to drive the hook into the lip.
