Fly fishing is a type of fishing that has an understated elegance. You can catch fish with a bamboo pole and a worm, but the fly fisherman craves the grace and beauty of this ancient sport. Beginners don't have to spend a fortune to find a good fly fishing rod. They just need to know how to get the basics when purchasing that first fly rod.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rod
  • Action
  • Line
  • Reel
  • Flies
  • Fly fishing vest
  1. Step 1

Choose between the three types of fly fishing rods: graphite, cane and fiberglass. Although a graphite rod is the most expensive, it is lightweight and durable, which makes it the perfect rod for a beginner. A five or six weight is a good choice.

  2. Step 2

Look for a rod that is about 9 feet long. This is perfect for catching trout, the fish of choice for most fly fishermen. But if you plan to do a lot of fishing in water that contains dense brush, you should get one a little shorter.

  3. Step 3

Select the action of your fly rod. Action is the term used to describe the bending resistance of the rod. A beginner should pick a medium action because it has good flexibility and works well in many different fly fishing conditions, such as a windy day.

  4. Step 4

Pick out the type of line to use. Experienced fly fishermen suggest the double-taper, which is thinner at the end near the fly, and weight-forward, which is the easiest to cast.

  5. Step 5

Buy a reel that balances out your system. If you have a medium weight and length rod, you also need a medium reel. There are three types of fly reels: small arbor, medium arbor and large arbor. The larger the arbor the more line it will use with each crank of the rod.

Tips & Warnings
  • A beginning fly fisherman can outfit himself for about $100. He will need an assortment of flies and fly fishing vest.
