The flare originated as a gymnastics move named after Kurt Thomas, the first to perform it in the Olympics. This breakdance move consists of flying scissor kicks that require the performer to lift one hand from the ground and then the other to allow the legs to move around the body. The move requires upper body strength and good balance to perform well.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Stand and extend your right leg in front of you and your left leg to the left of you. Place your hands on the floor so your right hand is on the floor in between your legs.
Step2
Lift your left hand in the air to help with both balance and momentum.
Step3
Put your weight on your left leg and swing your right leg up and around.
Step4
Rotate your legs around your body, shifting your weight from one hand to the other and back again as your legs pass.

Tips & Warnings

  • Perform short flare movements between uprocking when you breakdance. This allows you to incorporate flares into your dance even if you're unable to do them for long periods of time.
  • Practice shifting your balance from hand to hand while lifting your feet. The longer you can control your balance balance, the easier it will be to maintain while your legs are moving.
