When you're installing an electric garage door, you have a lot of tools that are necessary for the job. Frequently, the instruction manual lists all the necessary tools, but they don't tell you what they look like. Once you know what you to look for, installation is a breeze.

Things You'll Need:

  • Needle nosed pliers
  • Regular pliers
  • Wrenches
  • Socket wrenches
  • Power screw driver
  • Phillips screw driver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Power drill
  • Wire strippers
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Ladder
  • Hacksaw
  1. Step 1

Check for pliers that have a long pointed head. These are needle nosed pliers. They're different than the regular ones that have a wider flat gripping area. You need both to install the electric garage door.

  2. Step 2

Remember there are several kinds of wrenches and you need two of them. A socket wrench is a tube that attaches to a handle. A regular wrench has a round head with a square "U" cut from it to grip the nut. You need several sizes of each. Check your manual to find out which sizes are necessary.

  3. Step 3

Lay out all the screw drivers. You should have a power screwdriver to install an electrical garage door, which helps give extra push without effort on your part. You still can use a regular screwdriver but the job goes faster with power. You also need screwdrivers that aren't powered, including both a Flathead and Phillips. The Phillips has four edges that come to a point, use that screwdriver if the screw has a cross in the center. The flat head is a regular screwdriver.

  4. Step 4

Select a hammer and find your power drill. A regular claw hammer, one with two claws at the back, is used as is a normal power drill, corded or cordless. You can use screwdriver bits in the power drill if you don't have an electric screwdriver.

  5. Step 5

Find some wire strippers that have a multitude of sizes. Wire strippers will have circular openings cut along the blade to slide wires in and cut away the outside sheath.

  6. Step 6

Hunt for your favorite pencil. In order to maintain the integrity of the installation of the electric garage door you also need a level. Don't forget the ladder, unless you're taller than the garage door.

  7. Step 7

See if the manual asks for a hacksaw. The hacksaw looks like a cheese cutter with a sharp blade at the bottom. It's rectangular with a handle.
