Elbow strikes can generate a lot of power and impact, but few people use them in a self-defense situations simply because they don't know how to do them effectively. Women and smaller individuals can use elbow strikes to disable an attacker temporarily, giving them a chance to get away. Here's how you can perform elbow strikes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Strike with the portion of your arm just a couple of inches in front of your elbow, on the outside and towards your wrist, for forward-hitting strikes.

  2. Step 2

Face your attacker with your hands held in front of you in a traditional boxer's stance. The nice thing about this position is that both of your hands and arms are in place to move quickly, either to block strikes aimed at your face or to strike your attacker.

  3. Step 3

Step towards your attacker with the foot opposite your striking arm. If you plan to hit him with your right elbow, step in with your left foot.

  4. Step 4

Use your body, arm and shoulder momentum at the same time you step in to swing your elbow up and forwards, in a circular motion, striking your attacker in the cheekbone, jawbone or nose area. Avoid striking his mouth; his teeth can injure your elbow.

  5. Step 5

Face your opponent in the same position and using the same elbow, spin backwards and strike him on the opposite side of his face. You will still step in with the same foot but this time you will turn your toes inward as you step and pivot your body backwards, striking him with the back of your elbow.

  6. Step 6

Strike with the elbow point itself and the area a couple of inches above it when doing spin-back strikes.

Tips & Warnings
  • A spin-back elbow strike can generate a lot of power and disable your attacker but you must be comfortable spinning before you need to use the technique. Practice your self-defense moves with a friend holding a pillow at head height for you to strike.
  • Use elbow strikes for self-defense only. Create a temporary distraction and get away from your attacker.
  • The best self-defense is prevention. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and avoid situations where violence is likely to occur.
