Drum kits or sets were created to cut down on the space and number of drummers needed for a performance. Transitions on a drum kit are movements from one instrument to another. Mastering cymbal transitions allows you to move quickly and smoothly from cymbal to cymbal.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drum set with multiple cymbals
  • Drum sticks
  1. Step 1

Set your drum kit so you have access to all of the instruments. Set up a stool or chair up in the center of the kit to make for an easier cymbal transition.

  2. Step 2

Begin a beat on a cymbal or hi-hat. Drummers normally play the snare with their dominant hand and play the cymbal with their other hand. Most songs have a hi-hat to keep the tempo during the verses and use a ride cymbal for the chorus or solo.

  3. Step 3

Hold the tempo on the cymbal for a couple of bars. Get the wrist movement and beat down before you transition. If you have trouble with the beat, use the bass drum to maintain a steady beat.

  4. Step 4

Move your stick from one cymbal to the other in between beats. This allows you to jump right in with the other cymbal.

  5. Step 5

Maintain the tempo on the second cymbal to complete the transition.

  6. Step 6

Rotate back to the first cymbal in between drum beats. Continue to practice the transition until it is smooth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Move the cymbals to different locations in the set if you have trouble making the transition in time.
