Wearing dreadlocks embraces the natural state of African and African-American hair. Many African-Americans use this hairstyle as a personal expression of style as well as an alternative to a relaxer. Selecting accessories for dreadlocks continues this personal expression.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide the type of accessories you want such as a hat, scarf, wrap or beads. Beads accessorize individual locks while hats or scarves add to the overall hairstyle. Beads can limit hair growth.

  2. Step 2

Look for natural or synthetic beads wherever you can find them from your jewelry box to craft stores. Use jewelry you have such as chokers or earrings. Buy a diverse variety of beads from stores such as Artbeads. Natural bead choices include amber, clay, glass, pearl, shell or stone.

  3. Step 3

Check the hole size of a bead before you purchase or attempt to use it. Measure the diameter of your dreadlock to be sure the bead's hole is large enough. Use a bead drill to enlarge the hole size if necessary. Wash hair beads in mild soap and minimize its exposure to chemicals like hairspray.

  4. Step 4

Choose from different dreadlock headgear such as a head or hair wrap, headband, bandana, dreadlock hats, a cap, tam or kufi. Look for cotton knitted mesh that allows your head to breathe and absorbs sweat. Make sure the headgear isn't too tight and allows for eventual hair growth.

  5. Step 5

Use a scarf or ethnic fabric from a cloth store as a headband accessory.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check beads for interior lining or coloring because this lining could flake off and get into the dreadlocks.
