In today's pre-programmed digital age, you can toss the art of the disc jockey aside. But a true disc jockey knows that when they spin a record, it's an art form. Especially when they scratch up the soundtrack with needles. Here are some tips on how to set those needles for scratching.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Turntable
  • Record
  1. Step 1

Check the needle in the cartridge. The needle will pull out of the cartridge by slightly loosening a nut. Inspect it and make sure that it still has a point and is not overly worn or rounded. (You'll also be able to hear the difference as the record may start to warble.)

  2. Step 2

Push the needle to the left when replacing it. This will adjust the cartridge ever so slightly. Essentially when scratching, you want to create pressure against needle and record. By pushing it to the left, you'll be in position to scratch the record.

  3. Step 3

Tighten the weight on the end of the needle arm. This is another place where pressure is applied. This usually tightens in the old "right-tighty" sort of way. Simply tighten to the right.

  4. Step 4

Place the needle in the groove of the record and make sure it sits well inside.

  5. Step 5

Spin the record and see how it sounds. After all, you're the disc jockey, give it a few good scratches.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have to change the needle, remember to get the correct size based on the cartridge you are using on your turn table.
