Sectioning men's hair before cutting remains a basic part of the professional hairstylist's art. Regardless of the hairstyle your client has chosen, plan to separate the hair into the seven standard sections including the crown, right and left crown, top, left and right sides, left nape and right nape. The instructions below guide you in how to section men's hair before beginning to cut.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wide-tooth comb
  • Cutting comb
  • Hair clips
Step1
Wash and briefly towel dry the client's hair. Use the wide-tooth comb over the entire head to remove any tangles.
Step2
Position the cutting comb at the top left of the scalp, also known as the parietal ridge. Bring the comb down through the hair, making a part. Do the same on the right side.
Step3
Gather the sectioned hair with one hand. Pull it gently and twist it into a coil. Use a hair clip to hold it in place at the top of the head.
Step4
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 on the left and right sides. Each side of the head must have a clip holding down the coiled hair.
Step5
Perform the same combing, sectioning and coiling for the crown as well as the left and right crown. Finish the head with clipped coils of hair on the left and right sides of the nape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seat your client in a professional stylist's chair to maintain maximum control of the hair. Position the client so that the top of his head is two inches below your shoulders.
  • Always begin with freshly washed, wet hair. Make sure the hair is damp and not soaking wet so that it is easier to section.
