A layer cut is shorter on the bottom and longer on the top. How short and how long it is depends on you. Some men like their hair in a "high and tight" hair style. Others like their hair longer and shaggy on top. Follow these steps to layer men's hair.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Smock
  • Spray water bottle
  • Comb
  1. Step 1

Run your comb or finger down the length of the hair to separate it into a section. Your section should run up and down, ending at the nape of the neck.

  2. Step 2

Gather the hair from the first section. Comb it out and place it in between the index and middle finger of your left hand.

  3. Step 3

Pull your fingers out to indicate how long you want the man's hair to be. Make sure your fingers are perpendicular to the floor. This ensures the cut will be in layers.

  4. Step 4

Cut along your fingers in a straight line from the bottom to the top, to layer the hair. Drop it. The hair should be shorter toward the nape of the neck and longer toward the top of the head.

  5. Step 5

Move to the next section. Comb the hair straight and use your fingers as a guide as you trim the hair.

  6. Step 6

Go back over any area that needs more layering. Keep combing it out and trimming it straight up and down. This will blend the layers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never cut the hair straight across. This will cause a blunt line across the back of the head.
