When you crochet a beanie, you'll want to ensure that your hat will fit properly. The best way to do this is to try on the beanie as you crochet. Here are some tips you can use to help you adjust your hat as you crochet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Place your beanie on your head as soon as you think your initial circle is wide enough. Although the fabric of your crochet hat is not yet turning down, it will help to have an idea of the hat size before you start to taper the stitches in your hat. As long as it does not curl over the edge of your head, the size is fine.

  2. Step 2

Try on your hat again as you start to taper your stitches. The hat should fit comfortably, and either snug or loose is fine, as long as it's the size you want. If it's too big, take out one row of increases. If it's too small, take out a couple of rows and work in more increases.

  3. Step 3

Size your hat again as you near the end of the hat. This will help you to determine how far down your head you would like to crochet. If you want to make a cuff, you'll need to crochet about 3 inches longer than otherwise.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hats are supposed to fit snugly around the crown of the head. So don't worry about sizing a hat a little too small. This will help it to hug your head instead of flop around.
