How to Prepare Glass for Painting

Painting on glass is an easy craft to spice up some of the current glassware in your home. From vases to windowpanes, you can paint on any smooth surface. But before you start painting, prepare the glass to be painted.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all tags from the surface. Wash the glass with soap and warm water to remove dust.

    • 2

Add white vinegar or a similar light solvent to a paper towel or a clean cloth.

    • 3

Use the vinegar-soaked (or similar solvent) cloth to clean off any excess film, fingerprints or residue from tags.

    • 4

Dry the glass with a clean, lint-free cloth. After the glass is clean, check it for any remaining particles. Clean off any remaining fingerprints or residue before you attempt to paint.

    • 5

Make sure the glass is completely dry. Hold it with gloves or by its edges so you don't add any extra fingerprints.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place masking tape around the edges of the glass to avoid fingerprints. You can also use gloves to handle the glass.

  • Remove all traces of vinegar or solvent, or the paint will not set.

  • If you use masking tape along the edges, be sure to remove the residue from the tape before displaying your work.
