How to Restyle Cornrows

Cornrows are a common African and African-American hairstyle where the hair is braided along the scalp. Creating great cornrows is a skill that takes awhile to perfect. It also takes time to get cornrows done. You might think that cornrows must stay exactly the way they were originally done, but it isn't the case. With some work and creativity, you can easily restyle your cornrows into a completely new look.

Things You'll Need:

• Assortment of hair accessories such as clips, barrettes and elastics

1. Pull the cornrows into a bun by pulling them back into an elastic. Twist the cornrows around the elastic and secure into another elastic.

2. Restyle a single cornrow ponytail into two on the side of a head for a child's hairstyle.

3. Replace beads with barrettes or vice-versa. You can also leave the cornrows as is without any adornments.

4. Group your cornrows into three strands. Then braid these strands either down the back of your head into a French braid or braid it to the side in one large cornrow.

5. Play with your cornrows by turning them and twisting them to find a style you like. Just let your imagination go and see what you come up with.

Tips & Warnings

• Spray your hair with a mixture of water and detangler to help prevent fly-aways and hair breakage as you restyle your cornrows.
• If you want to wash your hair after you've restyled your cornrows, wear a stocking cap over your braids and use a hand-held shower head to force water under the braids. Dilute the shampoo so it doesn't dry your hair. Be sure to condition with a protein-rich conditioner.
