How to Upgrade Computer RAM or Memory

People can upgrade their RAM, or Random Access Memory, to make their machines run larger, more intensive applications faster. Adding to the computer's storage space is an inexpensive yet practical way to step up to the plate in the technological world.

Things You’ll Need:

• Motherboard access
• RAM
• Screwdriver

1. Access the motherboard by opening the computer case. Keep the unit's power supply unplugged at this time.
2. Find the memory slots on the machine. Note the current RAM's brand and type.
3. Use an anti-static wrist band to hold the new RAM by its edges. The band prevents accidental damage on the memory piece.
4. Insert RAM next to the occupied slots. Filling in other channels can result to the computer's failure to recognize the new part.
5. Join the notches located on the bottom of the RAM stick to the slot's keys. The edges must be adjusted in a parallel fashion.
6. Push the memory stick directly down into the slot until the retainer clips lock in place. This process requires some effort on the users' end.
7. Test if the computer recognizes the new RAM before completely closing the case. The machine will then run more smoothly and quickly.

Tips & Warnings

• Adding a faster RAM than the current one embedded in the computer system results to the new stick matching the speed of the already-existing piece.
• Power off the computer before opening it up as a surprising electric shock can occur.
• Avoid choosing slower, incompatible RAM sticks. Adding them to the machine can cause it to run erratically or not turn on at all.
