How to Add More RAM or Memory to a Computer

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. This is where a computer places files for you to work on. The more RAM a computer has the larger the file that you can work on. Adding RAM to an older computer is a good solution if you can't afford to buy a new one.

Instructions

  1. PC

    • 1

Shut down the computer and turn the power off. Turning the power off ensures that you'll save any data you may have been working on.

    • 2

Open the side of the case. It should just pop right off. If your computer was manufactured within the last 3 years, you shouldn't have to use a screwdriver. If it's older, you'll need a tool.

    • 3

Pull the slot in the back and locate the empty area where the memory goes.

    • 4

Make sure the power cord is unplugged to eliminate any shocks.

    • 5

Use a static strap to make sure there's no static electricity. The presence of static electricity could potentially damage your memory. If you don't have a static strap, ground yourself to a piece of metal on the computer.

    • 6

Install your memory. Align the tab properly, hold the slide in slot and push down. Power the computer back on. It should state, "The amount of system memory has been changed." All you have to do now is press the F1 key and your computer should now have additional memory. You shouldn't have to do any configuration.

    Laptop

    • 7

You can purchase memory from any online manufacturer. Plug in the model number to ensure that you get the right memory.

    • 8

Locate the door on the bottom of the laptop. You can open it using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 9

Notice the empty spot once you open the door.

    • 10

Take the memory and pop it in place with the tab properly oriented. It can only go one way. Push down on one side. Your laptop is ready to go. You can now use a new application or new operating system.
