Coloring hair at home is easy using today's more gentle and ammonia-free color formulations. Most home hair color kits take less than an hour to apply and get good results, even for first-time users.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair color kit
  • Old towel
  • Fine tooth comb
  • 6 hair clips
  • Timer
  • Hand mirror
  1. Step 1

Assemble all the necessary tools to do the job before mixing the color. Once the color is mixed, it must be used immediately, so preparation is important.

  2. Step 2

Use a fine tooth comb to part your hair into sections. Start with your hair's natural part, and divide your hair into 6 sections, twisting each section and clipping it to hold it up. Use a hand mirror so you can see the back of your head.

  3. Step 3

Wear latex gloves to protect your hands from the color solution. Mix the color thoroughly according to the manufacturer's package directions. Place an old towel over your shoulders to protect your clothes from any drips.

  4. Step 4

Brush a small amount of color mix onto the applicator brush; too much color on the brush may drip. Apply the color to the roots of each section. Wipe away drips with a dry towel.

  5. Step 5

Take down your hair, a section at a time. Separate each section into 1/4-inch strips and apply the color from your hair roots to your hair tips. If your hair has been colored before, apply color only to your roots. Cover each strip of your hair thoroughly without saturating it. Not all the color mixture will be used unless your hair is very long.

  6. Step 6

Place color on your head close to the scalp. Time the color application according to the product instructions and strand test.

  7. Step 7

Rinse the color out under warm water until the water runs clear. Wait 24 hours before you shampoo your hair. Dry and style your hair as usual.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch for color drips on bathroom surfaces, floors and walls. Wipe any drips immediately with a damp towel.
