How to Slip Block on Offensive Line in Football

Many people often overlook the offensive line in football. However, if they don't block, the offense can't run. Not to mention the quarterback will have quite a long day tasting turf as he's pummeled to the ground. Here's how to perform a slip block, which is one of the more common, when playing the offensive line in football.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 offensive players
  • Defensive player
  1. Step 1

Line up on the offensive as you normally would. Any two members of the offensive line can perform the slip block.

  2. Step 2

Punch the defender once the ball hikes. You shouldn't really punch the defender, that's just football terminology for jamming your hands into the sternum of the opposing team. The first offensive line player utilizes one hand, while the second offensive line player solidifies his position by planting his legs.

  3. Step 3

Assess the situation to determine if you are going to enact the slip block. You are essentially determining if the line back is going to rush the line as well. If so, one member of the offensive line's primary focus will be on that player. If not, then you may complete the slip block.

  4. Step 4

Finish the slip block by using a "half-punch" on the main defender. The first offensive line member continues to use the full punch. The second offensive line member utilizes just one hand to keep himself available for a surprise rush. Note that you use this block primarily when the quarterback is looking to throw the ball.
