Step 1
Ensure proper communication between the linemen during a play. Often linemen have to react quickly to stunts and blitzes by the defense. The lineman need to understand who has the responsibility for a given area of the field and let the other offensive linemen know if their player has left their area and is entering another linemen's area of responsibility.
-
Step 2
Recognize that the shortest distance for a defensive player to sack quarterback is up the middle. Offensive linemen need to ensure that the middle of the offensive line is blocking correctly. A lineman should not leave the middle to block an outside player unless they know another lineman will switch positions with them.
-
Step 3
Understand what type of pass protection or run blocking the play calls for in a given situation. If the play call has the quarterback rolling left or right then an offensive line must adjust their blocking accordingly. In addition, if the running play is a sweep outside it requires the offensive linemen to seal the edges of the play.
-
Step 4
Take into account the stature and physical attributes of the quarterback. For instance, if the quarterback is below average height than offensive lineman must keep the hand of the defensive players occupied so they do not knock down the pass.
-
Step 5
Practice proper techniques and balance as much as possible. Blocking begins with fundamentals and balance.
