Step 1
Stand behind the patient and ask him to relax.
-
Step 2
Massage his neck and shoulders to relieve tension. Check for inflamed muscles. If his muscles are swollen, ask him to take an anti-inflammatory so the swelling subsides before the chiropractic adjustment.
-
Step 3
Place one hand on the patient's neck and your other hand on her forehead. Gently rotate her neck from side to side to see her range of motion. Ask if she experiences any pain or tension while you move her head.
-
Step 4
Lay her patient on her back. Allow her to get comfortable.
-
Step 5
Massage the patient's neck again. Work the muscles in a curricular motion.
-
Step 6
Pull forward on his neck to stretch and work the neck muscles. Do not yank. Chiropractic adjustments and movements need to be gentle and quick.
-
Step 7
Place the patient's head in your hands. Turn his head to the side. Be careful not to overextend his neck. His turned head needs to be at the same angle as if he was looking over his shoulder. The adjustment is a soft turn and not a fast jerk or yank.

on 1/9/2009 If you are not a licensed Chiropractor you should not attempt to adjust anyone, period. To do so is a violation of the law. A Chiropractic adjustment is a highly specific and technically complex procedure that takes thousands of hours to master. Chiropractic is not a parlor trick. Adjustments are very powerful and without the proper training and practice even those with good intentions can do harm. Seek the care of a licensed Chiropractor.
Licensed Chiropractors are the ONLY way to get a neck adjustment! Period.

on 9/15/2008 Are you kidding ? Spinal manipulation should ONLY be performed by an osteopathic doctor or doctor of chiropractic. Who ever the "Health Editor" is sure gives a lot of bad, and just plain wrong advice.
