Learning to do a variety of steps in the cha-cha is a good beginning. Learning how to combine them to add style and passion to your routine is the key to successful dancing. Master each individual step and then combine them so that you can always return to the basic cha-cha dance.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with the basic 3-count steps. Step forward, rock back and cha-cha-cha. Step back, rock forward and cha-cha-cha.

  2. Step 2

Do an open break by releasing your partner so you can both step back, shift your weight and cha-cha-cha. This is especially effective to allow other dancers to move between you.

  3. Step 3

Close the break by stepping forward, shift your weight and cha-cha-cha.

  4. Step 4

Move to the side on the break by stepping left with your left foot and bringing your right foot to meet it, then cha-cha-cha. Repeat the movement on the other side by stepping to the right.

  5. Step 5

Use the cross-body lead by turning a quarter-turn to the left on two counts for the man. Women walk forward two steps on two counts. Each partner completes another quarter turn during the cha-cha-cha, so their positions are switched and they can begin another basic three count

  6. Step 6

Complete a half-turn by turning to the side during the basic as if preparing to do a full revolution. Use one beat to turn a quarter-turn so you and your partner are side-by-side. Use the other beat to return to closed basic and complete the cha-cha-cha.

Tips & Warnings
  • The cha-cha is a very rhythmic dance, so each move should be done twice or in even-numbered sets.
  • Practice with your partner. You'll learn how to read each other's movements. Some couples always do a half-turn prior to a full-turn in the opposite direction, so you learn how to anticipate the upcoming moves.
