1
Press the lever underneath the caulk gun and pull the rod back as far as you can. Lay the caulk gun down and pick up your tube of caulk.
-
2
Examine the tip of your caulking tube. Notice the marks that indicate where you need to cut the tip off.
-
-
3
Pick up either a utility knife or scissors and cut the tip off the caulking tube. The size of the hole you need depends upon the project you're doing. If you're doing finish work on tile, for example, make a smaller hole with an even cut lower on the tip. Bigger projects, such as tub caulking, require a bigger hole cut on the upper end of the tip.
-
4
Place the tube in the caulk gun. Open-barrel caulk guns allow easy insertion and removal of the caulking tube. Maneuver the tip into the lower section of the gun, making sure the diagonal hole faces downward.
-
5
Squeeze the lever a few times to prep the caulk gun.

Tips & Warnings
Some caulk guns have built-in tip cutters to make it easier to open your caulk tube and minimize damage to your scissors or knife. If you are performing finish work, though, it's best to cut the tip off yourself to ensure a clean, smooth look.
