Upgrading your car stereo is a relatively easy thing to do with just a few simple instructions or a little experience. If you are comfortable removing and installing the holding screws, you'll be off to a good start.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the dash plate that sits over all of the stereo components. This will expose the holding screws to allow you to get the stereo out more easily. Locate the holding screws which should be sitting just below the car stereo deck.

  2. Step 2

Find the screwdriver that will work right for the job. This could be an Allen, star tip, Philips or flat head screwdriver. Use the screwdriver to remove the two holding screws. Place them somewhere you will remember so you have them for the replacement phase of the car stereo swap.

  3. Step 3

Examine the screws to make sure they are not stripped or corroded. If they are, consider replacing them with new ones. This will cause less problems down the road. Also, be sure to check the new car stereo deck to make sure it does not use a different size of holding screw, as you will have to modify the space they go in before doing the upgrade.

  4. Step 4

Use caution when removing the deck from the console. There may be other things connected to it, such as the air conditioning controls and other components. Unplug everything from behind the car stereo to completely remove it. Make sure the colors of the wiring are easily visible, as this will be extremely important for the reinstallation.
