How to Prove and Wash a Deck of Cards

When you purchase a new deck of cards, there are some basic things you should do to the cards to prepare them. Proving and washing a new deck of cards are essential things to do to a new deck of cards. Follow these steps to prove and wash a new deck of cards.

Things You'll Need:

  • A brand new deck of playing cards

    Proving

  1. Step 1

    Prove the deck of cards by turning the stack of cards upside down and spreading them on the table from left to right in a fan shape.

  2. Step 2

    Go through the fanned deck with each finger to make sure you have each card. There should four cards of each number or face card (one for each of the 4 suits).

  3. Step 3

    Flip the cards over once you have finished proving the deck.

  4. Washing

  5. Step 1

    Wash the cards by first making sure they are all face down on the table.

  6. Step 2

    Mix the cards up on the table using both hands.

  7. Step 3

    Square the cards back up by gathering them back together into a pile. Gather the pile of cards and set them on edge. Then use your thumb in a rolling motion to roll the cards towards the table while stuffing them into a pile in a simultaneous motion.
