A spiral staircase is a functional addition to any home or office because of its space-saving design. To determine the size of the steps for your staircase, you must consider the use of the staircase as well as what pieces are available to you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the diameter of your spiral staircase, based on how much space you have. You should have at least 6 feet of room for your staircase in order to keep it safe.

  2. Step 2

Find a central pole to build your staircase around. This pole should be anywhere from 2 feet to 4 feet in diameter, depending on the amount of stability and durability that your spiral staircase needs.

  3. Step 3

Choose steps that are between 15- and 18-inches wide to get the best tread and easiest use of your steps. You should have your steps only a few inches larger than the central pole that you've chosen for the most durability.

  4. Step 4

Decide how many steps you're going to use and plan where you're going to get on and off your spiral staircase. This is important because you don't want to get on or off the staircase in a corner. You also don't want to use too few or too many steps as this can make the staircase dangerous.
