Floppy drives were once as important to computers as their keyboards. As time goes on, they become less and less common. Their installation has changed little over the years even as the floppy technology has continued to increase. Modern floppy drives can have a much greater speed and capacity than the drives many of us remember.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Punch out the spot on the front of your computer where the floppy will poke through. Each case is different; some have a simple plastic cover, while others have a full metal plate. If you're pulling out a metal cover, be careful as the edges of the punch-out are sharp.

  2. Step 2

Mount your floppy drive into a drive bay. Make sure you use all four screw spots so your drive can spin securely.

  3. Step 3

Plug in the floppy cable. Generally, you plug in a floppy cable so the red strip points towards the power connector.

  4. Step 4

Connect the power connector from your power supply. Some floppy drive power leads are extremely hard to plug in, so make sure you plug it in securely.

  5. Step 5

Boot-up your computer. If the floppy light stays lit all the time, then the floppy cable is upside down and needs to be switched.
