Being able to remain mobile in a boxing match is one of the fundamentals of fighting. To keep your balance, you need to maintain excellent footwork or risk giving the advantage to your opponent. Here's how you can stay nimble on your feet during a boxing match.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Step with the leg that is out front in the direction you want to move. This allows you to commit your weight without sacrificing a solid fighting posture.

  2. Step 2

Slide the rear foot to complete the movement. If you pick up your back foot you will be putting yourself off balance, ruining your technique.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the stepping movement and keep practicing it until you have mastered the technique. Being able to move confidently around the ring gives you a greater chance of moving into a scoring position.

  4. Step 4

Use your ability to move as an extra dimension in your boxing style. Many fighters who don't necessarily have great punching power can be formidable because of their dexterity.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your hands loose when you move. Your opponent might open himself to counterpunching if he sees your movement as a withdrawal.
  • Watch your opponent's footwork to see if there is any sloppiness that can be exploited. Many beginning boxers have difficulty mastering this aspect of their boxing technique.
  • Never cross your feet when you move to either your left or your right. If your opponent lands a solid punch when you have your feet crossed you'll be picking yourself up from the canvas.
