A DJ performs blending to switch from one record or song to another. This transition is slow and seamless in order to keep people on the dance floor. Here are some techniques to get in and out of DJ turntable blends.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use both turntables and 2 copies of the same song or match 2 songs of similar beats. When you use the same song, one turntable holds the instrumental version and the other turntable has the word version.

  2. Step 2

Decide how long you want to play the 2 records simultaneously before you make the transition. One song fades in while the other song fades out.

  3. Step 3

Cue the new song for transition on turntable 2 using your headphones to find the place in the record that you want to use to mix the 2 songs together.

  4. Step 4

Match the levels of the 2 records by beat, base or mids and highs. You can do this by using the trim control on the mixer, the crossfader or the upfaders.

  5. Step 5

Start with each upfader in the up position and the crossfader on the side of the song that is currently playing. Move the crossfader to the center to fade in the second song after matching the beats. When you want to play the second song only, move the crossfader all the way over and turntable one will fade out.

  6. Step 6

Vary the technique by starting with the crossfader in the center, the upfader on turntable one up and the upfader on turntable two down completely. Once the levels are matched, bring the upfader on turntable two up and when ready, slide the upfader down on turntable one to fade it out.

  7. Step 7

Practice repeatedly at different speeds using different techniques. To get in and out of DJ turntable blends properly, make sure the beats match before fading record one out and fading record two in.
