The forward stance is the basic position from which most karate moves begin. Learning to perfect the forward stance is important. Practice to ensure your spacing is correct and your technique is properly executed, as both are judged when you test for your next belt.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand in the ready position with your feet together and your hands at your sides.

  2. Step 2

Step forward and slightly to the left with your left foot.

  3. Step 3

Bend your left knee slightly and lean forward, keeping your back straight.

  4. Step 4

Cross your arms at your chest. Then, move so that your right fist faces upward at your right hip and your left arm fully extends above your left knee with your fist facing the floor.

  5. Step 5

Kneel down on your right knee. The distance between your right knee and the back of your left heel should be the width of your fist. Practice to ensure you leave this much space exactly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Execute a right forward stance by doing the same things, but step to the right and reverse your arm positions.
  • Ask for feedback from your karate instructor and listen well to the instructions you receive. Practice in a mirror to monitor your own technique.
