Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that emphasizes balance and self defense, and some refer to it as "the gentle martial art." However, jiu jitsu schools also participate in competitions. The basic foot sweep is a jiu jitsu beginner's technique that demonstrates that it's not necessary to out-muscle your opponent.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin the basic foot sweep while grabbing the back of your opponent's sleeve (upper arm) with one hand and his collar with your other hand.

  2. Step 2

Push against your opponent. This move is really a set up, usually causing the opponent to react by pushing back.

  3. Step 3

Pull him toward you when he pushes back. This move is unexpected, and he will be off balance.

  4. Step 4

Move your back foot around her front leg and position your leg behind her calf. In most situations, your lead legs will be on the opposite sides of your bodies.

  5. Step 5

Trip him over your leg to the ground.

  6. Step 6

Follow up with a submissive hold of your choice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Brace yourself for his body weight as you pull him forward so that you do not lose balance.
  • Place your leg behind her calf rather than the ankle, as this makes it easier to take her down.
