Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Piano
  1. Step 1

Recognize that the first note for both F major and minor is of course, F. The F note is three notes to the right of C. Because middle C is the note most beginning pianists find, it's best to start with the F closest to it.

  2. Step 2

Put your thumb on F. The next note of F major is A, which you play with your middle finger. Your little finger plays the C two notes to the right of the A. So F major is F, A, C.

  3. Step 3

Play the notes in F major one note at a time, and then play all three notes together on the piano.

  4. Step 4

Practice F major with your left hand too. With your little finger on F, you'll play the C with your thumb. Your middle finger remains on A.

  5. Step 5

Learn that the only difference between F major and F minor is the note played by the middle finger. In F minor, you make the middle finger go down half a step to A-flat (a black key).

  6. Step 6

Perform F major and F minor repeatedly until you can easily find both on the piano. You want the chords to sound smooth.
