Base molding is installed at the base of the wall and gives your room a finished look. Base molding is also known as baseboard in some parts of the country. Most do-it-yourself homeowners can install base molding with the proper tools, a little time and patience.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Rent or buy a miter saw if your job is a large job. If your job is small, an old style miter box will work. The miter saw or miter box is used to cut the base molding in angles, so they meet at outside and inside corners. The miter saw is one of the best tools to buy, if possible. You'll use it for more than base molding. The miter saw is electric and the miter box is a hand held saw with guides for sawing.

  2. Step 2

Buy the right type of finishing nail for the type of material you're using as base molding. If you use a nail gun, make sure you buy the right kind of finishing nail specific for the nail gun. Finishing nails are the most important tools you need, so the nails don't show when you've finished the job. You also need a nail set and hammer. The nail set is a tool used to install the final finishing nails or in places where the nail gun doesn't reach. Hammer the finishing nail into the molding until it almost touches the wood, then place the nail set on top of the finishing nail and hammer the nail set instead of the nail itself. The nail set protects the wood from hammer marks.

  3. Step 3

Choose the right type of caulking for your job. Caulking is placed at the top of the base molding after it's nailed in. Some caulk can be painted and some caulk is clear. Other tools you need for installation of base molding includes a tape measure, level, caulking gun and marking pencil. Depending on the type of floor the base molding sits above, you may need shims to hold the molding in place while you nail it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear eye protection when working with wood and nails.
