How to Do a Wushu Butterfly Kick

The butterfly kick is an advanced Wushu Kung Fu move. It is one of the first advanced kicks learned by students after they master basic forms. When properly done, the butterfly kick is powerful and beautiful to watch. This kick is best learned from an instructor or advanced student.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Assume your starting posture, turning the upper body by swinging your arms to the right and stepping left rapidly. This helps start your momentum.

  2. Step 2

    Step on the right leg and swing the left leg around. As you land in a wide stance, bend over and dip your upper body toward the ground.

  3. Step 3

    Swing your upper body up again as your left leg comes around. Bring your right leg up and around to kick into the air, using momentum to complete the twist.

  4. Step 4

    Your arms should be outstretched to maintain balance and momentum as you spin, landing on your left foot first

Tips & Warnings
  • You will need about 10 to 15 feet of open space for the run, take-off and landing. A padded floor used for gymnastics is ideal, indoor or outdoor carpeting can also be used.
  • Learn this kick from an instructor or advanced student to insure correct form and proper technique to avoid injury.
