The upright double bass is used as the backbone of the classical symphony orchestra to provide a bottom for the rhythm section and create a foundation for the entire orchestra. Playing the upright to support a classical piece requires a delicate touch and trained ear.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the bow to play the bass in a classical music arrangement. The bow is held in the right hand and the left hand is placed in the neck of the bass.

  2. Step 2

Relax the arms and draw the bow across the strings in an even, gentle motion to get the best sound out of the instrument. Connect the motion of the fingers with the drawing of the bow to develop a smooth flowing technique.

  3. Step 3

Play pizzicato without using the bow. The fingers play the notes in the pizzicato playing style.

  4. Step 4

Place the hand nearly perpendicular to the fret-board, and higher up on the bass, than for the jazz style, to play the pizzicato style. The fingers are used to pluck the strings.

  5. Step 5

Combine the two styles of play depending on the music. Bass players are required to switch between styles throughout a concert and consistent practice makes the transitions effortless.
