The Bossa Nova, or "New Beat," is a staple of Latin music like jazz or pop. This Brazilian musical style derived from the Samba and it expresses a laid-back, fun-loving approach to life.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Listen to Bossa Nova musicians to get a feel for the rhythm. Bossa Nova has a particular light and carefree mood. The sunny disposition of Brazilian singers and jazz musicians is articulated in the music.

  2. Step 2

Emphasize the end of the second beat and the end of the fourth beat. This is the typical Latin jazz rhythm which defines the Bossa Nova beat.

  3. Step 3

Set the beat mentally by imagining a dance. The Bossa Nova is a dance rhythm and should be played as such. As a rhythm instrument, bass players should let their body move to the music without interfering with their playing.

  4. Step 4

Change the position of the fingers on the fret board to outline the chord changes. Chord changes should be made smoothly and simply. Let the fingers glide between the frets.

  5. Step 5

Imagine a drum and piano or other instruments when practicing alone. The bass is the backbone of the Bossa Nova sound and its background as a slow Samba requires players to explore the deep roots of Latin music.
