Ripping a wooden board is the process of cutting the board lengthwise. This is the most basic table saw technique, but it can be dangerous if you don't do it correctly. Take precautions when you use a table saw for this task.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put a ripping blade or a combination blade in your table saw. Loosen the gate so you can set the fence at the correct distance from the blade. Measure the distance from the inside of the blade to the inside of the gate and set the fence accordingly.

  2. Step 2

Adjust the blade height so that the teeth are just above the board. The top of the board should be halfway between the tip of the teeth and the bottom of the teeth. If you set your blade too low, it may result in a kickback.

  3. Step 3

Slowly push the board through the blade, keeping it moving the entire time but not rushing it. Keep your board level so that it doesn't see saw through the blade.

  4. Step 4

Use your push stick to push the last foot or so of the board so your fingers and hands don't get too near the blade while it's running.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear safety glasses when using any type of woodworking equipment that may cause a kickback of material.
  • Only turn on the table saw's power switch when the blade is clear of all debris and you're ready to begin ripping.
