How to Set Up an Audio Interface at Home

If you are setting up a home recording studio, you are likely recording on a home computer. You will need an audio interface to connect the microphone to your computer, which will take the microphone's vocal signal and transfer it to a digital recording. A simple straight connection will work, but you may want something that gives you more control.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Simple Direct Connection

Step1
Determine what types of connector the microphone has that can connect to the computer. The primary method is a stereo cable connection, but some microphones may have a USB connection.
Step2
Connect the stereo plug to your home computer's audio input if this is the only possibility. This is the simplest connection available, but it will produce the least quality because you can't completely control the input level.
Step3
Use the USB port if you can. The USB connection's quality will be slightly better than the stereo. But it is still a direct connection with limited control.

Adjustable Interface

Step1
Get an audio interface with adjustable sound levels. A standard audio mixer will work fine, but a digital audio interface with a firewire connection works even better.
Step2
Attach the microphone to the interface. The microphone port should be clearly labeled. You'll need to check if the connector will fit the port, for you may need an adapter for a larger or smaller connection.
Step3
Figure out the connection needed for the mixer to the computer (if you're using a stereo mixer). You'll likely need a cable with a composite (red/white) connection on one end and a mini stereo connection on the other.
Step4
Use the firewire connection if you are using a firewire interface. You'll need to make sure your computer has a firewire port. Most recent models should have one.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your computer likely has a mini stereo cable port. If your microphone's connector is larger, you will need an adapter for a mini connection.
