Sewing a border onto your baby quilt will add a frame that draws attention to its design and craftsmanship. You can choose to use contrasting or coordinating fabric to showcase your quilt with borders.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rotary cutter and ruler
  • Quilting pins
  • Thread that matches your fabric
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron and ironing board
  1. Step 1

Select your border fabric. Choose a fabric that picks up an accent color from one of your main quilt fabrics to enhance your quilt design.

  2. Step 2

Cut the border fabric to the same length as the quilt. Lay the border strips along the quilt center, smooth them carefully and cut them to the correct length with your rotary cutter and ruler.

  3. Step 3

Pin the right side of each border strip to the right side of the quilt top. Pin the corners of the strips first, and then the center. Finish by spacing pins about 3 inches apart along the entire edge.

  4. Step 4

Sew the border strips to the quilt center, using a straight stitch and a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Sew slowly to ensure a straight seam.

  5. Step 5

Press the seams open when you have finished sewing them and repeat Steps 1 through 4 to make the top and bottom borders for your quilt.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your border strips are not as long as your quilt top, piece shorter strips together to achieve the necessary length.
