How to Frame a Second Wall in Your Garage Project

The renovation and building of a garage requires the construction of stud frame walls. You'll probably need to frame four walls if you're building the typical garage. Framing the second wall is much like framing the first. If you want to create a sturdier support wherever your walls intersect, you can add extra studs.

Things You'll Need:

• Wooden studs
• Nails
• Hammer

1. Figure out exactly where you're going to put the second garage wall and make sure you get the proper measurements.

2. Place the top plate on the floor with its side up. Measure the location of each stud and then place a mark on the sole plate and the top plate so you'll know where to position the studs.

3. Position the studs along the top plate. Butt them against the marks. Line up the marks of the sole plate with the studs.

4. Attach the studs to the top plates and sole plates with a hammer and nails. Adjust the position of the studs as needed to keep them straight and on the marks you made.

5. Lift your assembled frame for the second wall of your garage into place. This may require help. Attach the sole plate of your garage wall frame to the floor. Pre-drilling and anchor bolts will be required since you'll likely have a cement floor.

Tips & Warnings

• Use both feet to stabilize the stud you're nailing in so that it doesn't wiggle around while you hammer. Put one foot on each side and squat down to begin hammering.
• Purchase nails that are at least twice the thickness of the wood you're working with.
