The garage is an area where homeowners typically store unused household items, tools and lawn equipment. Adding a new wall to the garage can add new storage options and relieve space constraints. Check with local authorities to obtain any permits you need to add a new wall to a garage. Local building codes dictate how the project will continue.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Broom
  • Cement sealant
  • Large paint brush
  1. Step 1

Clean out the clutter in the project area. Move all items and store them away until the new garage wall is in place.

  2. Step 2

Sweep the entire floor area where the new wall stands. Use a vacuum to loosen any debris or concrete chips from the floor.

  3. Step 3

Inspect the walls that make up the interior portion of the project area. Look for cracks, chips or damage that would hinder the construction and repair.

  4. Step 4

Cover the entire masonry and cinder block wall with a thick coat of cement sealant. This sealant is available at home improvement stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot. Use a large brush to completely coat the surface. Let the sealant dry before continuing the new garage wall.

  5. Step 5

Assemble all of the necessary tools, hardware and lumber needed for the new garage wall project. Consult with a contractor for a plan to follow for the duration of the construction.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask an electrician to inspect and consult on the project if the new garage wall will be wired for electricity.
  • Consider any plumbing requirements for the new wall.
  • Study the home's plans to better understand where special needs exist, such as load bearing and sloped foundations.
