How to Do Night Geocaching

Geocaching at night can add a new twist to the sport. Some caches are only meant to be found at night, while others can present a greater challenge in the dark. Night caches often have reflectors that lead you to the final location via flashlight. So grab the flashlight and go.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the descriptions carefully to determine the type of cache. Some descriptions will alert you to the fact that it can only be found in the dark. Others may tell you that the cache can be found 24 hours a day.

    • 2

Use your GPS system to guide you to the location. Caches are marked by their coordinates, so you must have a GPS system to find the general location for the cache. Units that light up in the dark can be helpful at night.

    • 3

Assign a good flashlight to each member of your group and make sure each has a charged mobile phone and extra batteries. Set a waypoint for your vehicle, as it's easy to get turned around in the dark. Always let someone know your location.

    • 4

Stay aware of your surroundings. The dark can hide potential dangers and obstacles, so you must keep a close eye on where you're walking.

    • 5

Dress appropriately. Wear clear, protective lenses to protect your eyes from low hanging branches and wear good hiking shoes. Make sure that you're dressed warmly and put a first aid kit into a backpack with a food and water.

    • 6

Abide by the rules of the location you're in. Some daylight caches can be found at night but park rules may prevent individuals from entering after dark. Follow the rules so other geocachers can continue using the location.

Tips & Warnings

  • Flashlights with adjustable beams can be useful in looking for night caches.
